About Airfix

Airfix was founded in 1939 in the UK by Nicholas Kove, a refugee from Hungary who originally manufactured rubber inflated toys.

The name Airfix was chosen because part of the process involved fixing air into products.  Kove believed that all successful companies should have their names at the beginning of business directories and consequently the name Airfix was born.  After the Second World War he switched to producing plastic combs, and was the first manufacturer in the UK to introduce an injection moulding machine.

In the late 1940s Airfix was approached by Harry Ferguson (the tractor manufacturer) to make a cheap model of one of his tractors that could be used by his sales team as a promotional tool.  At first there were problems making the model, so it was decided to make it in a series of parts to be assembled by a team of skilled workers.

This ready-built tractor proved to be popular and Ferguson allowed Airfix to produce them as toys and sell them under the Airfix name.  It soon became obvious that more tractors could be sold if they were cheaper, and to achieve this they sold the kits unmade with instructions.  This proved to be successful, and shortly after F.W. Woolworth approached Airfix suggesting that, by using a more stable polystyrene plastic and poly bags with a card header, it would meet the Woolworth’s retail price of 2 shillings.  The small scale Golden Hind was launched in 1952.  Woolworth’s buyers then began to ask for more subjects, then soon after Airfix began to produce a wider range of polybagged model kits – the all famous Spitfire model appearing from 1953.

Airfix grew throughout the 1960s and ’70s as the plastic kit modelling hobby became ever more popular.  The range then expanded to include figures, trains, trackside accessories, military vehicles, engines, rockets, large classic ships, warships, liners, modern cars, vintage cars, motorcycles, spaceships and more.

Hasegawa-09070-Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero Fighter Type2-1/48 scale.

Hasegawa-09070- Plastic Model Kit.

Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero Fighter Type2

1/48 scale Model Kit.

Information.

The JT70 Mitsubishi A65 Zero Fighter (Zeke) Type 52 1/48 Scale Model by Hasegawa is an excellent kit that would go up towards the top of the to-do scale modeller’s list.

Being one of the best Zero fighter kits that Hasegawa has put in the market, and with the updates that it had produced since its first production in 1981, you could say that the “It’s about time to get this one done!”

The Mitsubishi A6M “Zero” is a long-range fighter aircraft, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945. The A6M was designated as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 Carrier Fighter , or the Mitsubishi A6M Rei-sen. The A6M was usually referred to by its pilots as the “Reisen” (zero fighter), “0” being the last digit of the Imperial year 2600 (1940) when it entered service with the Imperial Navy. The official Allied reporting name was “Zeke”, although the use of the name “Zero” was later commonly adopted by the Allies as well.

Sometimes considered as the most effective variant, the Model 52 was developed to again shorten the wings to increase speed and dispense with the folding wing mechanism. In addition, ailerons, aileron trim tab and flaps were revised.

Tamiya 1/35 US M1a1 Abrams With Mine -T35158

Tamiya Item No T35158

1/35 Scale.

US M1a1 Abrams With Mine

The U.S. M1A1 Abrams with Mine Plow

Developed during the early 1980’s, the M1 Abrams tank benefited from the latest technological wonders of the time, giving it enormous advantage on any battlefield. The turret, being very angular and squat, had a very roomy interior.

This angular design was combined with Chobham armor for excellent protection against the kinetic energy from hollow charge projectiles. The hull sides and rear panels are vertical, with only the front angled to deflect anti-tank shots. The 1500 horsepower Avco-Lycoming AGT-1500 turbine engine provides remarkable speed and maneuverability plus being regarded as one of the quietest tank powerplants available today.

During the mid 1980’s the M1 underwent an improvement program to upgrade its 105mm gun to the type M256 120mm smoothbore cannon. The armor at the frontal area of the lower hull front and turret was also increased, and it was given the new designation of “M 1A1”. Other improvements are seen in the enlarged rear turret bustle stowage rack, a new style crosswind sensor, a revised gunner’s sightmount, plus reinforced suspension and transmission unit. One of the more specialized pieces of equipment utilized on this tank is a detachable plow for uncovering and neutralizing mine fields. Land mines are a menacing problem for both humans and vehicles during any conflict, and the operations of this specialized M1A1 helped clear the way for troops following the tanks during the recent Gulf conflict.
